This makhila walking stick has a bovine horn pommel top with an inset enamel coin reading:

'The makila is the walking stick of the Basques, used either as a travelling companion or as a symbol of authority and respect.
It is a cane made entirely by hand, with a manufacturing process that can last between 5-10 years, which has remained intact for centuries.
The Basque Country is the name given to the home of the Basque people. The Basque country is located in the western Pyrenees, straddling the border between France and Spain on the coast of the Bay of Biscay. Euskal Herria is the oldest documented Basque name for the area they inhabit, dating from the 16th century.'
The shaft has a brass collar, at which point the top & handle unscrews.
The stick has a medlar wood shaft, a traditional Basque wood, and an original brass & spike ferrule. The ferrule is engraved with traditional Basque designs and reads:
'Eskual Herria
1931'
